Chaucer in the Cupboard

Posted on Wednesday 7 March 2007

A rare copy of Chaucer’s works, found in a cupboard in Dorchester, is expected to sell for £100,000 at auction.

The limited edition was published by William Morris, founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, and illustrated by Edward Burne-Jones. An auctioneer discovered the book sitting at the bottom of a cupboard, wrapped in an old cloth.

Matthew Denney, from Duke’s of Dorchester, Dorset, said: “Morris and Burne-Jones were firm friends and shared a love of Chaucer.”

At this point little else of the discovery is known.
