Wholly Warhol

Posted on Friday 15 June 2007

On 20th June 2007 Bloomsbury Auctions in London is hosting the world's first ever sale devoted entirely to Andy Warhol, the father of the Pop Art movement and cult figure of the 1960s. Every lot in the sale, which will include paintings, watercolours, prints and unique works on paper, is completely fresh to the market and has been authenticated by the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Angus Maguire, Bloomsbury's head of contemporary art, says "With his mass-produced images he took away the exclusivity of fine art and made it available to everybody on any level of understanding, from the academic to the every day. Today this '15 minutes of fame' Pop Artist has become the second highest grossing artist after Pablo Picasso."

The Warhol Sale spans every decade of the artist's output and includes a book of the complete set of 18 watercolours on a black lithograph base entitled '25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy' (1954), one of his earliest works, estimated at £120,000 - £160,000 (lot 10).

Those interested in his iconic portraits will not be disappointed, with the likes of Liz Taylor, Mick Jagger and Ronald Reagan on offer, as well as a silkscreen of Judy Garland which is estimated at £30,000 - £40,000.
