‘The realm of book collecting holds a fascination for every one, no matter how obscure your interest, there is bound to be a book about it!’ says Roger Treglown, Chairman of The Chelsea Book Fair. ‘The Fair enjoys a reputation for its charm and variety, and prides itself in offering something for everyone, from the browser and would-be collector to the connoisseur, with items ranging from a few pounds to a few thousand pounds.’ The Fair presents all manner of books from early printed books to modern first editions; books on all subjects from gardening, golf, food and wine to art, travel, science, children’s books and colour plate books. The Fair also encompasses maps, atlases, prints, vintage photographs, autographs and letters.
Last year The Chelsea Book Fair very successfully flung open its doors to embrace members of the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB), thus making the Chelsea Book Fair an international event for the first time in its history. Now the word has spread and at the time of going to print, there will be at least 10 overseas booksellers from Germany, France, the United States, Ireland and even Argentina. All the exhibitors are members of either the ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association) or ILAB, which means that the public can buy with confidence, knowing that everything for sale is guaranteed by the stringent Code of Good Practice.
This year the Fair has the added attraction of a non-commercial exhibition intriguingly entitled ‘The Pre-History of the Motor Car 1600-1850.’ This private collection consists of books, prints and ephemera collected over several decades.
Tickets to the Chelsea Book Fair are £5.00 on the door or they can be obtained free in advance from the website www.chelseabookfair.com - or you can gain free entry with an issue of the Oct/Nov 'Rare Book Review'.
