The Holkham Bible: A Facsimile

Another great publication to come from the British Library is a facsimile of one of its most prized treasures, the 14th century Holkham Bible picture book. Now reproduced in full colour, the beautifully illustrated manuscript is accompanied by a scholarly commentary by the leading expert on illuminated manuscripts, Michelle Brown.

The Holkham Bible picture book, rich with colourful depictions of familiar London landmarks, offers a unique insight into the medieval world of the Bible and everyday life.

The entire manuscript has been photographed and reproduced on special paper that imitates the look and feel of the original vellum. Included in the facsimile is a full transcript of the text, translated by medieval manuscripts expert Michelle Brown, who also provides an extensive commentary on the period, complete with the fascinating discoveries she has made from close examination of the images.

The Holkham Bible picture book is surely the most heartfelt of medieval manuscripts, and one of the most unusual,” said Michelle Brown. “It is a unique example of medieval culture and a book you never tire of, for no matter how many times you look through it, there is more to admire and to intrigue.”

The book can be purchased from the British Library Shop (tel: 020 7412 7735/ e-mail: bl-bookshop@bl.uk) and online at www.bl.uk/shop as well as other bookshops throughout the UK.
