Skin-bound

Posted on Monday 3 December 2007

Wilkinson’s Auctioneers in Doncaster will auction a book called A True And Perfect Relation Of The Whole Proceedings Against The Late Most Barbarous Traitors, Garnet A Jesuit And His Confederates. But there is something unusual about this novel…

The 400-year old book is covered in a sheet of wrinkled human skin. It is believed the skin was taken from a corpse of one of Guy Fawkes’ fellow conspirators in the 1605 Gunpowder Plot.

The novel was published in 1606, only months after Jesuit Priest Henry Garner was caught and executed for his part in the plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

The book’s owner hopes the book will go to a museum so that the public can view it.
