Cover to Cover

Posted on Friday 15 February 2008

A fascinating exhibition celebrating seventy years of the Penguin book cover continues at the Holburne Museum of Art until March 24th.

The exhibition charts the development of the Penguin design, from its iconic early covers to the diverse covers of today, including beautiful original artwork, early proofs and some of the most renowned book covers in publishing history.

The iconic three panel and colour-coded covers represented Penguin for almost thirty years, and the exhibition explores the process of adaptation and refinement that occurred in the design, as well as the introduction of illustration and photography.

Using original material from the Penguin archives and the University of Bristol, the display will present how Penguin has both reflected and influenced the changing trends in British culture. The classic orange fiction paperbacks will be displayed alongside hundreds of Penguin book covers.
