The manuscripts of one of Asia¹s most infamous
collections of art is fully revealed at the British Library in
Ramayana : Love and Valour in India¹s Great Epic.
Taken from one of India¹s most historical literary works, the exhibition
displays over 400 of these extravagant paintings that were designed in the
seventeenth century on behalf of Rana Jagat Singh of Mewar.
As Jerry Losty, the curator of the Ramayana exhibition explains,
³The cumulative effect of seeing picture after picture packed with detail is
truly remarkable and offers visitors a unique experience that has previously
only been available to very few scholars.²
Based around the abduction of Prince Rama¹s wife, this epic love story sees
Rama and his army of monkeys on a quest to rescue his beloved wife from the demon King of Lanka.
Although traditionally performed on stage, this magnificent tome displays an array of colour and narrative that encapsulates the entire vibrancy of the
manuscripts.
The Ramayana : Love and Valour in India¹s Great Epic is now available in
hardback at £25.00 and paperback at £15.95
