Classics Revived

Posted on Friday 22 August 2008

Classics illustrated, the famous adaptations of Classic Children’s literature, will appear on the W.H Smith bookshelves from 25 September, after a 40-year rest, with digitally enhanced illustrations.

First published in 1941, the comic book series covered such literary classics as Moby Dick, Robin Hood, The man in the Iron Mask, Hamlet, and A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, before finishing its first run in 1971, having produced 169 issues.

Timing is key to the re-launch of the Classics series. Jeff Brooks, Managing Director of Classic Comic Store, explained: “These timeless novels remind us of the great adventure stories from our youth and still impart their magic today. At a time when we see children reading less and our literacy rates are a great worry, the graphic novel has the potential to get reluctant readers engaged in these wonderful stories, and hopefully encourage them to go on to read the book.”

For the older age group of 8-14, Classics Illustrated offer works by Shakespeare, Verne, Dickens, Wells and Louis Stevenson, while Classics Illustrated Junior caters for the younger readers, adapting classical fairy tales and folk stories such as Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm in comic form.

War of the Worlds
(8-14) and Snow White (Junior) will be the first two installments for this Classic series, now revived.
